Time as an Element: Final

Above, Jessica placed a tea bag into a a maple syrup bottle. Each day, as the water darkened from steeping tea, she painted a new version.

Most works of traditional art capture a moment of time and hold it frozen for as long as the piece survives. There are some modern artists that pushed past the notion of time as static and explored the effect time had on their work.

For example, Monet’s paintings, such as the series of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Rouen, captured the light at different times of the day.

Today’s postmodern and contemporary artists take the concept further by incorporating time into their work as if it were an element of art. Without the element of time, their work would be meaningless at best, nonexistent at worst.

Read about artists who incorporate time into their work in the article: New Ideas in Art: Time as an Element.

The Theme: Time

The theme of this project was Time as an Element. The concept was for the students to create a work of art that incorporated time in some way. That is to say, time must have passed in order for the piece to have been created. this as opposed to representing time i.e. by drawing a clock.

Chase decided to create a long exposure photograph. He placed his camera on a bridge overlooking Highway 64. From there, he took several long time exposures as the cars passed from either direction.

Kimberly wanted to relay the feeling of innocents and joy she experienced as a child playing with paper airplanes. She create several different planes and measured the time and distance of each plane as it flew by a painted background. She captured the event on film.

Elora also used film to capture the time represented by clothing in a laundry basket.

Alayna mixed photography with her own handwriting in this piece titled, "He Loves Me Not". A flower slowly dies over a period of weeks.

Ashley placed a large sketchbook on an easel for this interactive project. Over several weeks, students were encouraged to create a work of art based on their emotion using a color specific to that day.

Anna wanted to combine the concept of time with cooking and eating food. Each piece of toast is a value darker over time. More jelly is spread as the value is increased and more bites are taken as the jelly is increased.

Rachel also wanted to explore the effect of  time and food but choose a more random method. Each pine cone was painted, covered with peanut butter and birdseed and left to see the effect the local wildlife and weather would have on the work.

"All Fall Down" presents time in several ways.. The time it took Ryn to set up the work.. The amount of time that passed before someone accidentally knocked it down.. and the time it takes each domino to fall.

Time as an Element: Production

For this project, the artists were challenged with incorporating time as an element into their work. The concept was not to simply show time, as in drawing a clock, but rather have time needed in order to complete the assignment. Here are some of the work ideas in progress.

As time progresses, a machine malfunctions and breaks down. This artist will demonstrate this through time with an animation. Testing the flip book.

Imported drawings in an animation program on the iPad.

The artist has created a backdrop that will serve as a measuring device. An assortment of paper airplanes are being created that will be flown against the backdrop to measure time and distance.

The image represents two ideas.. metamorphosis and time. the artist is also incorporating color with black and white being used for the older images.

It takes time for seeds to grow. This piece when complete will spell out the words "Life" with actual growing flowering plants.

Each day, new color bubbles are blown onto the canvas.  The canvas can be thought not as much as a final painting but a collection of paint captured in space over time.

Dominions not only take time to set up, the fall down sequentially over time.  The artist is preparing this piece, titled "All Fall Down".

Time as an Element: Final

This project asked students to incorporate the concept of “Time“ as an element into their art. How they decided to accomplish this and the media was totally selected by the student.

The piece above is a zoetrope which when spun, animates the construction of a NC light house.

This interactive work of art encourages the view to draw or write in the sand with watercolor paint an issue  or trouble they are experiencing in their life. The running water soon erases whatever was written. Time heals all wounds.

Over the years, the American flag has changed many times yet each time the change was significant at that moment. This painting on canvas incorporates all the different flags at once in order to project that concept.

Created with photo transfer and acrylic, this works anthropomorphizes the hibernation sequence of a stuffed bear and his shopping adventures at FoodLion.

Washing hands after each fight causes the soap to become smaller and smaller as it dissolves over time with each use.

As the road vanishes into the distance it takes with it the future. This drawing displays time as first, a black and white image as it morphs into the modern day and beyond.

Many years later, the same moment is captured in this photograph as a modern day recreation.

Through the hourglass, tiny beads fall. Each bead contains the date from a receipt. Each receipt was saved over time and symbolizes the importance, or lack thereof, of the purchase.

Time as an Element: Production

The concept was to include the concept of Time into the art.. How the student decides to incorporate Time, either by displaying it, waiting for it, or showing the effects of it, is up to them. The choice of material was also open.
