Shadow Art - Art 1

Ring! Ring!
Ms. Sudkamp's Art 1 tried something new this past week.  Inspired by Sand in previous years we tried shadow art.  Each student brought a random object to class to add to the plethora already in class. What they came up with is astounding.

Shadow Art

Did your teacher ever give you a box of junk and a strong light source and tell you to make some art? I'm sure he or she did. It happens all the time. In fact, it happened today in Sands Art One class. Here are the results...

They create a giant monster and...

The monster is looming over a small child's bed. Scary!

I like this tree. it is part of...

This recreation of the movie poster for E.T.

Cool how the bottles taped together make ET and the boy on the bike.

They are making an amusement park including..

A rollercoaster and a ferris wheel.

This bird is flying in the sky of clouds.

Working on a water scene.

We didn't start the fire. Incorporating a little Photoshop and projecting it on the wall.

A B movie about a guy walking a plank...

Aliens abducting an innocent victim.

Space, the final frontier... and the final shadow art of the day.

Shadow Drawing

Today in Art One we set up piles of junk to create shadow drawings...

Using a ruler for the water line and a water bottle to create the blue of the sea, these students create an ocean scene.

This group used cut out paper to create their African safari.

Hanging junk form strings helped this group create outer space.

Using junk out the box, this group create a fire rescue scene.

Shadow Art

Remember those old slide projectors that were used to put art history students to sleep? You'd be amazed at how easy it is to get your hands on them nowadays.

Today, we set up six slide projectors and tried our hand at making shadow art.

Most of the art was made by projecting the light through cut out paper, however there were a few other methods that turned out rather interesting.

The image above was created by layering cut out paper on top of paper. Instead of project the shadow, the paper was placed over the light so that the different thickness of paper created different values.

To create the shadow image of the ship, the students stacked junk till they got the shadow to look just right.
