Light Drawing Photography

art of apex

In AOIT Art One we are taking a look at Photography as our new unit. Yesterday, we tried our hand at a little Forced Perspective. Today, we decided to give light drawing a try.

It's easier to say than to do. It takes a lot of trial and error to get an image that looks good. However, in it's simplest form, it is nothing more than a glow stick and a camera with a slow shutter speed.

Here are some of today's photos.

Light Costumes

This semester, instead of just tasking my Art One students with creating light drawings, i asked that they create Light Costumes.

Each group had to decided on an iconic figure that they wanted to draw and then, through a combination of free hand drawing and light stencil use, create a light image that reflects their chosen icon. Here are some of their Light costumes!

More Light Graffiti

Created these light graffiti paintings using a long camera exposure and some big, fat glow sticks.

Light Graffiti

Stencils.. They're not just for breakfast anymore.. or, uh spray paint. They work really well when painting with light. This is our first round of light graffiti painting. The first three images were actually painted using a cellphone. The rest were painted with glow sticks.

A Little "Light" Graffiti

The Thursday right before Spring Break was the perfect day to try out a little light stenciling. Yes, we did some light drawing too but the emphasis on this day was glow sticks and stencils.

This image of the Terminator was create by running a glow stick behind a stencil cut out. Simple in it's execution but rather effective.

Light Painting

Crack open the glow sticks and shut off the lights, it's time for light painting!

This year we tried a few new ideas including stencils and silhouettes.
