In Art History, we studied prehistoric art and the techniques used to paint
cave walls and ceilings. You know, those cave people couldn't stroll down to
the local Michael’s and pick up a tube of paint. No! They had to use materials
available to them.
With that in mind, I asked each student to create a Pop Art piece using homemade
paint. They could use anything except paint... or blood. No blood cause that's
kinda gross.
Here is a partial list of material they used to create these works... Icing, chewed gum, coffee, butter, ketchup, mustard, tomato soup, peanut butter, burned sticks, cookies, cake, more cookies, cornstarch and peas.
I love this idea! It really makes the artist have to invent new ways to solve a problem. Did you begin this lesson with some history about the development of different art media?
