A Little "Light" Graffiti

The Thursday right before Spring Break was the perfect day to try out a little light stenciling. Yes, we did some light drawing too but the emphasis on this day was glow sticks and stencils.

This image of the Terminator was create by running a glow stick behind a stencil cut out. Simple in it's execution but rather effective.

Monster Round 2 : Building the Packages

Apex HS Art continues our attempted at collaborating with the kindergarten class at the Moline School District in Illinois. They drew monsters. Now, our Art One class at Apex has recreated them in 3D. Meanwhile, the Computer Art class is creating package designs.

Today, we started packaging the monsters. Though we still have a few more, most monsters are completed and most package designs printed. We started putting the monsters in their packages today to get them ready for shipping. Here's a look at what we have so far...

Anamorphosis 3D Street Art

Today, a few students from the Art One class took the grid map that one of the Computer Art students had made to create 3D street art. This tasked proved more challenging than it appears.

First, it was cold outside and the sun hadn't yet made it over the top of the building. Second, it is had to draw a cube that isn't a cube so it looks like a cube but only from one perspective. However, I think we learned a lot from this attempt and those lessons learned will help us with future attempts.

From this angle the cube should look correct and slightly 3D... and it does though I was not in the right spot when I took this photos so the cube looks rather squished.

However, from the other angle you can see how long and drawn out the drawing really is.

The sun was on the screen so I couldn't really see how the photos I was taking were coming out. Tomorrow, I'll take a few more earlier in the day before the sun come over and I bet they will look pretty cool and less squished. :)

Monsters Round 2: Painting Sculptures

Apex HS Art continues our attempted at collaborating with the kindergarten class at the Moline School District in Illinois. They drew monsters. Now, our Art One class at Apex has recreated them in 3D. Meanwhile, the Computer Art class is creating package designs.

Today, we started painting the monsters. Our goal is to ship our monsters out before the end of the year. But don't tell anyone in Illinois. It's still top secret for now.

Forced Perspective Photography

Forced perspective is a technique that employs optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger or smaller than it actually is. Since it was such a lovely Friday, I thought it would be fun to get outside and try our hand at a little forced photography.

What size drink? I'm thinking the extra, extra large!

No, don't step on me giant person!

Big stairs, little people. Hey, get off the railing!

Help! I'm being squished!

How did they spray paint on such a tiny rock?

No frogs around. Maybe this chicken is a prince?

Rearranging the goal posts... a little more to the left.

Really, I could listen to you all day. I'll just lean on this tree and you tell me all about it.

In the south we drive big trucks. Really big trucks.

Art History Kite Day 2012: The Video

A look at the greatest moments when Apex HS Art History 2012 took to the field to fly their kites... or whichever

Stencils with Textures

This semester we tried something a little different with our stencils. We added to forms of texture. First, instead of simply painting on cardboard, we applied several layers of newspaper, wallpaper samples and even sand. Second, we used different types of cloth to spray paint through to create patterns.

Applying paint and layers of stuff.
