Art History 2012 Shirts!

A week ago, I asked the class to come up with a list of things they learned this year in Art History.

Today, Meghan brought to class these very cool Art History 2012 shirts! How cool is that? Very!

On the back, the Top 10 things Learned ...

On the front, a quote from Banksy, stolen from Picasso, which is funny cause we stole the idea for the shirts from AP US History who also made shirts (but ours are better).

Maddie sports her cool shirt.

Art History Award Day

Today we celebrated a semester's worth of Art History class with an award ceremony. The class created the topics for the awards and then voted for their classmates.

Above, Trendy Jason and Caity were voted in Art History King and Queen.

Sid won most likely to steel the Mona Lisa

Brian won most likely to be Banksy.

Rachel won most likely to get married in an art museum.

And Shannon won most likely to become the next sister Wendy.

Cougaroo!

Last week Kangaroo gave each Apex HS students with perfect attendance, no tardies and good conduct for two weeks, a free Roo Cup. The Roo Cup gets you a 20-ounce refill of soda or an icy squishy for only 25 cents. You can read all about it in this Cary News article.

The idea was so popular with students and staff that there has even been a rumor (though denied by some administrators) that Apex will change its mascot to the Cougaroo!

With that in mind, I thought the Cougaroo would make a good Day 7 for the 12 Days of PhotoShop.

Scribble Art Using Masks

Today, we used a mask in PhotoShop to create crazy scribble line portraits.  The technique is simple to learn but effective. You can watch this very short tutorial, less than 3 minutes, to learn how! https://vimeo.com/33344753

When Some Students Are Done But Others...

As art teachers, we all experience those times when some of the class has finished working on a project and some have not. Of course the ideal would be for all students to finish a project at the same time but practically speaking, it rarely happens.

Kelly (above) is working on her painting, our current project.

There are methods that can be applied to deal with this dilemma. i.e. students who are done could work on other projects that they haven't completed or perhaps work in class on a sketchbook homework assignment. Today I chose a different approach.

"Look," I said. "You are all capable of finding something on your own to work on." I might have been wrong. Here is what they came up with...

Matt decided to draw on my white board.

Gail decided to paint my back door purple. She used a blow dryer to make sure the paint was dry.

Sophia decided to braid Cheryl's hair.

Tyler learned how to create text portraits in PhotoShop.

Madi took a nap.

And Logan worked on a stencil...

Which also got spray painted on my classroom door.

Another, Another Anamorphosis 3D Street Art

After last nights storm washed away all the grids plus the 3D dolphin we made yesterday, we weren't as excited to start over.. especially on a Friday. Still, we pushed on to complete one more attempt at  Anamorphosis 3D Street Art.

It's a Keith Haring dog and from one view it looks terribly distorted. From the right angle it looks correct. However, it doesn't look particularly 3D..

Some of the photos did produce strange perspective effects. I think this photo, which was taken by mistake, makes the Rachel the sweep look like she is floating.

Here you can see how distorted the dog is as it is being traced in the grid.

The difference between the view above and the one below  displays how distorted the dog really is.
