the Apex Influence : Make Art!

One of the goals of this site is to not simply showcase student's work but to help others understand how we did each project so they can try it too. This week I received three emails from three different schools talking about projects they completed at their school after seeing Apex's work.

The first email came from Ms. Boykin of Corinth Holders High School right here in North Carolina. She found our site after having a similar idea to turn bricks into pixels. She had emailed me earlier in the year asking how much chalk we went through to create our bricks to pixel project.

The next project I received as a tweet that simply read > "Look - it's Mr. Dennett - thanks @iansands for the idea #artsed http://t.co/BC6oZ6CF"

If you're interested in creating a post it note mural, you can find instructions right here on our blog.

The last email came from John Romang, art teacher in Metropolis, IL. His Art Club students decided to try their hand at making some Skittle art! You can see more examples of their work on their blog http://www.artatmassac.blogspot.com/

Final Monsters

A few monsters from beginning to end. Three classes from two different schools all working together to complete a joint project.. Monsters in a Box.

The monster were drawn by Theresa Gillespie's kindergartener class in Illinois. The pictures went to the Art One class at Apex High School where they were transformed into 3D. Afterwards, the Computer Art class at Apex designed these monster packages.

Illustrator Flowers

For our first lesson in Adobe illustrator, we created flowers. If you'd like to give it a try, check out the video tutorial below...

This beginner tutorial demonstrates how to make flowers using gradients and the bloat effect using Adobe Illustrator CS4..

Walk Cycles!

Walk Cycle... or uhm.. crawl, fly or turn into a small fairy cycle.

The assignment was for the Computer Art class to hand draw the 8 steps (no pun intended) of a walk cycle and convert them into an animate GIF using PhotoShop... but this class got a little creative which is always good.

Art History DC Trip 2012

It all started when the bus pulled out of the Apex HS parking lot at 5am friday morning...

We drove all morning and arrived in DC about 10:30am. First stop, the East Building of the National Gallery of Art where we saw this lovely Pollock painting.

Caity is a big Warhol Fan

I tell the kids if they blow real hard the Calder will move. I'm not sure they were buying it this year.

At first the picture taking is relatively normal...

As the day goes on the photos seem to get stranger.

After lunch we visited the West Building. This group looks really into studying the El Greco. I think they were just getting tired from so much walking.

I'm pretty sure Cam is a distant relative of Van Gogh.

Next we cut through the sculpture garden and went to the Hirshhorn. They had some really cool installations. This one had us walk through all these strands of blue chords. It was fun to watch people enter cause they disappeared into the blue.

There was another installation that had big comfy pillows on the floor. the lights were off and they were playing Jimi Hendrix and projecting images on the wall. I'm not sure this was art as much as a history lesson about the 60's

Ok, you guys know that isn't art right? No, seriously. It really is just a blank wall.

It all ended when the bus arrived back home at 12 midnight Saturday morning. a long but fun day!
