Recycled Son of Man

Several weeks ago, environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck visited our Art History class. We discussed various artists that use recycled materials to create art. She recommend we watch the movie Waste Land about the artist Vik Muniz, which we did.

Today, Bryant returned and worked with our class to recreate a work of art using recycled materials. The class chose Magritte's Son of Man as our image. They only had one day to complete this project. afterwards, the bottle caps were placed back in storage.

This was a test image to get a feel for it. In a few week's we are going to attempt a larger, more complex image. Stay tuned!!

NCMA Artists in Process

Two of our art of Apex classes met with two classes from other parts of the state to participate in the Artists In Process program offered by the NC Museum of Art. The idea behind the program was to have two classes from different places come together and meet at the museum. Together the students explored the museum collection looking for artwork that either represented identity, story or place.

Now back in the classroom, the students are creating art inspired by their experience. Below is a mix of some pieces started for this program and a few projects still in the works from previous projects...

Post It Notes Kaleidoscope 2015

Withe the Kaleidoscope Exhibit at the Cary Town Center coming up, I wanted to display something different than the usual individual matted art work. Since the AOIT Art class was becoming increasingly proficient using Photoshop, I though it might not be a bad idea to have them create a Post-It Note mural.

We took a look at how to create a gradient map and also how to apply the mosaic filter. From that point on I turned them loose. Here are the two designs they decided upon. Above is the final mural as part of Kaleidoscope. The second mural is being displayed at school between the B and C buildings.

AOIT Art Meets 123D Creature

The AOIT Art class spent a little time learning the iPad app 123D Creature this week. It's a fun, 3D program that lets the user manipulate virtual clay and form it into anything they like.  Once the v-clay is molded, if can be sculpted and then painted using any textures the user can find.

If you're interested in learning a bit about 123D Creature, check out this tutorial that give a pretty nice overview. in the meantime, here are a few of today's creatures...
