Back in 2009 I started giving my students post it notes and setting them free to create art throughout the school. It wasn't long till one of the students figured out how to create a portrait. They used another student as a model and create the portrait you see above.<br />

The following semester, 2011, a ten more groups joined the adventure. One group create this portrait of <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">Leo Dicaprio</span>. It made the cover of <a href="http://apexhsart.blogspot.com/2011/03/hot-off-presses.html" target="_blank">SchoolArts magazine</a>.<br />
<br />
Back in the day, we used Photoshop to create the map used as a guide to make the murals. Here is a link to a post title <a href="http://apexhsart.blogspot.com/2010/08/post-it-note-project-explained.html" target="_blank">Post It Notes Explained</a>. <br />
<br />
I would never do this project again. However, if you are crazy enough to try it, here are a few helpful hints.<br />
<br />
1. Gluing down the Skittles is a time consuming process. This project took way longer than I thought it would. However, we made rather large portraits. If I were to do this over again, I would certainly reduce the amount of squares when applying the mosaic filter. Maybe keep it down to 40 x 46.<br />
<br />
2. Skittles are not cheap. I Spent over $100 buying Skittles and I bought them in bulk bags at Target, and once Target sold out, at Walmart. The students also brought in bags. However, if I were to do this project again, limiting the amount of squares when applying the mosaic filter would also reduce the amount of Skittles required.<br />
<br />
3. Skittles attract unwanted visitors. It was amazing how many students from other classes stopped by just to see how things were going during this project. They didn’t show that type of curiosity when we were working on value scales. We also had ants. If you leave one Skittle on the floor, an ant will find it. That ant will then call all his ant friends because ants apparently like to share.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://vimeo.com/159859485">10 Years Art of Apex</a> from <a href="https://vimeo.com/apexhsart">Apex HS Art</a> on <a href="https://vimeo.com/">Vimeo</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
Ten years ago, I returned to teaching, accepting a position at Apex High <br />
School. The first year here, I only taught Art One and Art History. Later, we expanded the program to include Computer Art, and since then I have also taught Art Two and Art Three.<br />
<br />
However, it doesn't matter which classes I taught. That's because, as the old saying goes, I don't teach art, I teach students. It's the students at Apex that made my position so easy to do and so enjoyable to have. They are the best!<br />
<br />
Now, after ten years, I find myself starting a new adventure. However, I will always remember the students I was lucky enough to work with at Apex... so willing to try new things, so ready to dive in, sometimes about to drive me crazy, but always keeping it "real"!<br />
<br />
So here is a quick look at the last ten years of the Art of Apex!<br />
<br />
Thanks!<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dqegd4pZeQA/Vtnvle_8_uI/AAAAAAAAPHE/QyJko_lboE4/s1600/DSC07039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dqegd4pZeQA/Vtnvle_8_uI/AAAAAAAAPHE/QyJko_lboE4/s320/DSC07039.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
How do you draw a portrait when you have no idea who you are drawing or what they look like? Well, that was the assignment given to these art students as a way to get to know each other as the new semester kicked into gear.<br />
<br />
First, I had everyone fill out an anonymous questionnaire. The questions asked about the student's strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes but it there was nothing on it about physical description. Next, i distributed the questionnaires around the room. Nobody knew which student they had.<br />
<br />
Their assignment: create a portrait based only on the information that you learn from reading the questionnaire. Media and everything else was up to the artist.<br />
<br />
Today, each student presented to the class, describing what they created and why they created it. Then, I revealed which student they had created a portrait of.<br />
<br />
The images show the person holding up the portrait that was created based on their personality questionnaire. Interestingly enough, the artists really nailed it!<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1c69wMCkqEM/VtCcs6cdHiI/AAAAAAAAPGE/eOG6g-n0lIA/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1c69wMCkqEM/VtCcs6cdHiI/AAAAAAAAPGE/eOG6g-n0lIA/s320/1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
With the beat of Will Smith in the air and the taste of gummy bears, the Art History class spent the day playing games. Playing games? Seriously?! First you<a href="http://www.artofapex.com/2016/02/write-your-own-art-history-quiz.html" target="_blank"> let the students write the quiz questions</a> and now you're playing games. Don't you ever learn anything in that class? Well, yes, we do. we just have an interesting way of doing it.<br />
<br />
OK, so what is game day? Well, groups of students spent the week developing a playable game. The games had to be informative, original, well crafted and fun! It's hard to get all four so most games lean heavy in one direction or another. But all were fun to play. We even invited a few other classes to stop by. Everyone had fun and learned a little something too!<br />

<br />
I just received this month's issue of <a href="http://pubdev.ipaperus.com/ArtsandActivities/AAMarch2016/" target="_blank">Arts & Activities</a> magazine and right there on <a href="http://pubdev.ipaperus.com/ArtsandActivities/AAMarch2016/" target="_blank">page 14</a> is an article all about choice-based art at the high school level. I received an email a few months back from <a href="http://studio-learning.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Nan Hathaway</a> asking if I would contribute an article to the magazine. I knew right away what I wanted to write about, teaching <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/2014/06/whats-hot-for-2014-15.html" target="_blank">Artistic Behavior units</a>.<br />
<br />
What's an Artistic Behavior unit you ask? Well, its a unit based on how artists think and work. When I first started teaching high school, I based my units on media (painting unit, printing unit, ceramics unit, etc). However, I quickly realized this was too limiting. Next, I created units based on the elements and principles of art. (i.e. instead of a painting lesson i would teach a unit on color theory.) This was better but it still was limiting. I needed some way to teach students not just to make art but to become artists. That's when <a href="http://purteeart1.weebly.com/" target="_blank">Melissa Purtee</a> and our Apex team spent a summer coming up with <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/2014/05/art-education-beyond-pencil.html" target="_blank">the idea </a>of Artistic Behavior units.<br />
<br />
An Artistic Behavior unit should be designed broad enough to encompasses many different ways of thinking and making art. In the article, I describe just a few of the units including <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/search/label/observe" target="_blank">Artists Observe</a>, <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/search/label/steal" target="_blank">Artists Steal</a>, <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/search?q=solve+problems" target="_blank">Artists Solve Problems</a> and <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/search/label/self%20directed" target="_blank">Artists are Self Learners</a>. <a href="http://pubdev.ipaperus.com/ArtsandActivities/AAMarch2016/" target="_blank">Click on the link here</a> to read the article online and learn more about Artistic Behavior units.ian sandshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12120584898108401447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8826240726141548436.post-900470080428704002016-02-21T13:08:00.002-05:002016-02-21T13:15:20.454-05:00Write Your Own Art History Quiz...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FBs2dh9Gq_o/Vsn1WX1uXmI/AAAAAAAAPEE/wqlGmaMepcE/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FBs2dh9Gq_o/Vsn1WX1uXmI/AAAAAAAAPEE/wqlGmaMepcE/s320/1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Doesn't it seem silly that the teacher puts out all this Art History information and then gets to decide which questions should be on the quiz? Wouldn't it make more sense if the students decided what part of Art History they wanted to learn? I did... and thats when I decided to start letting the students write the quiz questions. Here is how it works...<br />
<br />
I ask everyone to write a question but I do pick the top ten. I think this helps encourage them to write interesting questions. I take photo's of their questions and LCD them on the board.<br />
<br />
Here are the top 10 quiz questions from our unit on Northern Renaissance art. Take the quiz. See how well you do! Answer key below.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The latest addition to our 3D printing plan is an app called 123D Catch. What's that you ask? Well, its an iPad app that allows the user to photograph an object and then convert those images into a 3D mesh, ready for printing on our Makerbot 3D printer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Take this clay sculpture of a dinosaur bird head for example. It was created in clay and will be fired in the kiln. While we were waiting for it to dry, we took a few (40 something) photos using 123D Catch. The app captured the images and converted them into a <a href="http://www.123dapp.com/catch/Birdworld/5135941" target="_blank">3D image</a>. Now we can export that mesh and print as many <a href="http://www.123dapp.com/catch/Birdworld/5135941" target="_blank">dinosaur bird heads</a> as we want. How cool is that! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The images below are not the clay version but rather the 3D image that 123D Catch created.</div>

<br />
The next step was to export the mesh and import it into the 3D printer. We loaded the file into our Makerbot software, pressed the 'print' button and several (12ish) hours later, a 3D printed replica of our clay dino-bird head!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<br />
This 3D version is ready for a little clean up to remove the supports and then it can be painted and displayed with pride.<br />

<br />
Meanwhile the clay version just came out of the kiln. This piece is also ready for glazing or painting or whatever direction the artists decides to go in.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've started printing with our Makerbot 3D printer and we're learning a lot! The students have been using apps on the iPad including 123D Design and 123D Sculpt+. These apps let students either organize and combine forms to create new objects or manipulate the equivalent of virtual clay. In either case, the students are able to build unique things.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a little bit of a learning curve trying to understand how best to orientate an object to get the best print. Do we leave it standing up or lay it down? A lot of trial and error.. a lot of error.. but success too. Here is a look at some of the objects in various stages of printing...</div>

<br />
The March issue of SchoolArts magazine is out and it features not one but two articles out of Apex High School. How very exciting!<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.schoolartsdigital.com/i/635862-march-2016/25?" target="_blank">What's in Your Locker?</a></b><br />
The first article is about our locker project. In class, we talked about space and how artists utilize space when creating art. Then we took advantage of the empty lockers in our school. nobody uses those lockers.. not till now!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.schoolartsdigital.com/i/635862-march-2016/25?" target="_blank">Read the Locker Project</a> online!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<b><a href="http://www.schoolartsdigital.com/i/635862-march-2016/18?" target="_blank">High School TABology</a></b><br />
The <a href="http://www.schoolartsdigital.com/i/635862-march-2016" target="_blank">second article</a> talks about incorporating TAB at the high school level. Sure, there are plenty of "how to" publications on elementary TAB but not so much at the HS level. This article addresses TAB vs choice based teaching and explains w what teaching TAB in high school really looks like.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cbaOcGX-APc/VrJvrweh_tI/AAAAAAAAO9c/thfGCuqyZ9U/s1600/DSC06684.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cbaOcGX-APc/VrJvrweh_tI/AAAAAAAAO9c/thfGCuqyZ9U/s320/DSC06684.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The first day of the new semester I handed my students paper and colored pencil and said, "We're going to do this tutorial... and we did. When we were done we talked about what my role in the project was. Here were the findings:<br />
<br />
I picked the project idea<br />
I found the tutorial<br />
I decided on the medium<br />
<br />
That might sound like the role of the teacher. Well, it's not. That's the role of an artist. Artists decide what inspires them, artists seek out 'how to' information when they aren't sure, and the artist always picks the media. So why was I doing it?? I'm not the artist. They are the artists!<br />
<br />
First issue was knowing what materials were available. stealing an idea from <a href="https://artbybarnett.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Jean Barnette</a>, our students went on a material scavenger hunt. They had a list of items to find out about including different papers and different types of paint, they even had to find stuff that they didn't know what it was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s5NLCPqOlTU/VrJvr-ja1vI/AAAAAAAAO9Y/rD1igd3A4MM/s1600/DSC06715.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s5NLCPqOlTU/VrJvr-ja1vI/AAAAAAAAO9Y/rD1igd3A4MM/s320/DSC06715.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, they had to find their own techniques. I encourage them to find a tutorial that they either didn't know how to do or one that improved on a skill they already knew. Then I asked them to do that tutorial.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSBp-viXXtw/VrJvrx81-rI/AAAAAAAAO9g/ffGVX0XO5y4/s1600/DSC06726.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aSBp-viXXtw/VrJvrx81-rI/AAAAAAAAO9g/ffGVX0XO5y4/s320/DSC06726.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, we talked a bit about inspiration. What are you concerned about? What are you interested in? What are your passions?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VPiHBRJ6jI0/VrJvskmxVmI/AAAAAAAAO9k/IATuZdKEF1M/s1600/DSC06728.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VPiHBRJ6jI0/VrJvskmxVmI/AAAAAAAAO9k/IATuZdKEF1M/s320/DSC06728.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once they went through all three steps, I asked them to design their first project for my class. They had to decide what to make, they had to learn a new technique or improve on an older skill to make it, and they had to decide what medium to use to best bring their idea to fruition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9rc_3gjA3wA/VrJvsjmZGJI/AAAAAAAAO9o/KOem2K012uE/s1600/DSC06729.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9rc_3gjA3wA/VrJvsjmZGJI/AAAAAAAAO9o/KOem2K012uE/s320/DSC06729.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The one thing I can say is, I have no idea what's going on! Students are hard at work on something.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qOTo4x26KSs/VrJvs9-ivRI/AAAAAAAAO9s/hbHlkxrQQok/s1600/DSC06732.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qOTo4x26KSs/VrJvs9-ivRI/AAAAAAAAO9s/hbHlkxrQQok/s320/DSC06732.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
They are trying new techniques, new media...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7iLfInTOk5E/VrJvtKeGgSI/AAAAAAAAO9w/QwX4QPItIMk/s1600/DSC06751.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7iLfInTOk5E/VrJvtKeGgSI/AAAAAAAAO9w/QwX4QPItIMk/s320/DSC06751.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

To traditional materials like pastels..<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span class="s1">The term Bootcamp, originally coined by <a href="http://purteeart1.weebly.com/" target="_blank">Melissa Purtee</a>, refers to a method for handling the teaching of a set of techniques. Bootcamps are best utilized when covering a detailed range of techniques within a particular medium that couldn't be sufficiently cover in demos or mini-lessons. </span><br />
<span class="s1"><br /></span>

<span class="s1"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">During the bootcamp, students are given both short demos as well as more thorough exercises in which to explore the media. The goal is for students to gain an understanding, not to create a work of art.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Though Purtee prefers to run her bootcamps consecutively, I prefer to roll mine out a week at a time, alternating between Bootcamps and <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/2014/06/whats-hot-for-2014-15.html" target="_blank">Artistic Behavior Units</a>.</span></div>

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Vpylc_p91M/Vo_6UaaNinI/AAAAAAAAO7w/E0b7dY8Megc/s1600/3d1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8Vpylc_p91M/Vo_6UaaNinI/AAAAAAAAO7w/E0b7dY8Megc/s320/3d1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the third test of our Makerbot 3D printer and it's an important one. For this test I wanted to see if we could take a creature created in 123D Creature on the iPad and turn it into an actual 3D object.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uo5adgGIM90/Vo_6UbKtC0I/AAAAAAAAO8A/Ig-UusJkB94/s1600/3d3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uo5adgGIM90/Vo_6UbKtC0I/AAAAAAAAO8A/Ig-UusJkB94/s1600/3d3.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
It started a a virtual moose created using <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/search?q=123d+" target="_blank">123D Creature</a> on the <a href="http://www.artofapex.com/search/label/ipad" target="_blank">iPad</a>. From the iPad we were able to export the mesh. The mesh was easily imported into the Makerbot software to prepare for printing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QwfOadeQHP8/Vo_6UaTYusI/AAAAAAAAO8E/vSnUiYF2nt0/s1600/3d2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QwfOadeQHP8/Vo_6UaTYusI/AAAAAAAAO8E/vSnUiYF2nt0/s320/3d2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The 123D Creature file was exported as a .obj file. Once imported into the Makerbot software, it was easy to rotate and scale. The software also allowed us to decide which way to rotate the creature so it uses the least amount of supports, saving filament. This is still something we're learning about.<br />
<br />
