Perspective : Photography

I hated perspective drawing in high school. Hated. I remember being so bored sitting in the hallway, drawing for days. The worst part about it was that one little mistake would ruin the illusion that I had been working so hard to create.

My art one students learned about perspective in mini lessons over a week. They learned about one, two and three point, then tried each one out in short drawings. The week ended with students applying what they learned in a two day assignment. The task was to capture perspective observable around our school campus.
Students could pick one, two or three point perspective and draw in any media or use photography. While some students did decided to draw and produced some beautiful work,  photography was the most popular choice.

The photo kids scampered around campus, enjoying the lovely spring weather and investigating their environment through new eyes. Students who chose to draw found a spot and settled in. They found perspective everywhere. Best part - no one was bored. :)

2014 Teens, Inspired exhibition at the NC Museum of Art

Congratulations to the following Apex artists who have been selected to be part of the 2014 Teens, Inspired exhibition at the NC Museum of Art!

The NCMA had over 100 entries- the largest number of submissions since the exhibition began 4 years ago. The jury chose the following works to be hung at the North Carolina Museum of Art Summer- Fall 2014 based on creativity, connection to the work that had inspired it, and artistic merit:

Brittany Baril
Mummy in the Afterlife

The inspiration for this piece was the False Door of Ni-ankh-Snefru. I saw the piece and was more inspired off of its history than anything else. The door is meant to be used as a passageway for the soul of a deceased person to travel between the afterlife and the world of the living.

What’s the Pointe?

My What’s the Pointe drawing was inspired by The Classical Collection, specifically including pieces such as the Torso of Aphrodite and Aphrodite of Cyrene. These two pieces are sculptures of the female body influenced by the Greek and Roman culture.

Hannah Siegel
Shades of a Day

My piece, “Shades of a Day”, is inspired by Monet’s classic painting, “The Cliff”, an oil painting completed in 1883.The theme for this assigned project in my art class was “Time as an Element,” in which somehow our piece had to incorporate time. I was immediately drawn to Monet’s series of paintings that he created, using various colors to portray different emotions throughout different times of a day, something that is very evident in “The Cliff”.

Wall Murals : Perspective in Progress

This week has been perspective week here at Apex with many of the classes participating in some form of art with a focus on this principle.

This class was challenged with creating a wall mural that incorporated perspective in some way.. The group above is creating a tunnel effect to mimic the NC State Free Expression Tunnel.

This group is working with their take on looking in the Wardrobe.

This group decided to incorporate the concept of localized perspective by writing a word on the wall that can only be viewed from one direction.

This team is giving us a view through the bricks and a path that travels across several different landscapes.

Time as an Element: Final

Above, Jessica placed a tea bag into a a maple syrup bottle. Each day, as the water darkened from steeping tea, she painted a new version.

-------

Most works of traditional art capture a moment of time and hold it frozen for as long as the piece survives. There are some modern artists that pushed past the notion of time as static and explored the effect time had on their work.

For example, Monet’s paintings, such as the series of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Rouen, captured the light at different times of the day.

Today’s postmodern and contemporary artists take the concept further by incorporating time into their work as if it were an element of art. Without the element of time, their work would be meaningless at best, nonexistent at worst.

Read about artists who incorporate time into their work in the article: New Ideas in Art: Time as an Element.

The Theme: Time

The theme of this project was Time as an Element. The concept was for the students to create a work of art that incorporated time in some way. That is to say, time must have passed in order for the piece to have been created. this as opposed to representing time i.e. by drawing a clock.

Chase decided to create a long exposure photograph. He placed his camera on a bridge overlooking Highway 64. From there, he took several long time exposures as the cars passed from either direction.

Kimberly wanted to relay the feeling of innocents and joy she experienced as a child playing with paper airplanes. She create several different planes and measured the time and distance of each plane as it flew by a painted background. She captured the event on film.

Elora also used film to capture the time represented by clothing in a laundry basket.

Alayna mixed photography with her own handwriting in this piece titled, "He Loves Me Not". A flower slowly dies over a period of weeks.

Ashley placed a large sketchbook on an easel for this interactive project. Over several weeks, students were encouraged to create a work of art based on their emotion using a color specific to that day.

Anna wanted to combine the concept of time with cooking and eating food. Each piece of toast is a value darker over time. More jelly is spread as the value is increased and more bites are taken as the jelly is increased.

Rachel also wanted to explore the effect of  time and food but choose a more random method. Each pine cone was painted, covered with peanut butter and birdseed and left to see the effect the local wildlife and weather would have on the work.

"All Fall Down" presents time in several ways.. The time it took Ryn to set up the work.. The amount of time that passed before someone accidentally knocked it down.. and the time it takes each domino to fall.

Kaleidoscope Exhibit at the Cary Town Center

This year for the Kaleidoscope Exhibit at the Cary Town Center we decided to try something a little different. Each year the show provides 12 panels for Apex to hang art. We decided to use six of those panels for an installation.

Each class participated in an origami lesson and each student folded a butterfly. We collected all the butterflies and made them part of the display. The first panel has only one butterfly and then each consecutive panel adds more and more butterflies.

The other six panels contain the art work of Apex students. There will be a reception on Wednesday, April 16th at 6:00 p.m. for all artists, families and teachers. It will be near the entrance to Dave and Buster's.

Zonkey!

The Zonkey, yes a real animal a hybrid mix of a zebra and a donkey, has been a staple of Apex Art Teacher Mr. Sands' critter drawings. Sands has painted Zonkey on a bus, on a billboard and on his business cards (see below).

Still, Sands has always had one problem. Translating the 2D drawing to a 3D creation. Though he tried numerous times, he was never successful in his attempts.

Finally today, the vision of the 3D Zonkey was brought to fruition by student Megan. You may remember Megan from such classes as Art Two.

"Look Sands, Megan's Zonkey is better than yours!" stated (soon to be x-Apex Art Teacher) Kimberly Sudkamp.

Sands was ecstatic to see such a well created stuffed Zonkey. "I'm ecstatic to see such a well created stuffed Zonkey," stated Sands. "This is the best day of my life!"
