Stencils : Round 1

Art One Sands Period 1 class is finishing up their stencils. We put n emphasis on using different textures by using a variety of different types of background layers including newspaper, torn up books and magazine collage. We also experimented with spray painting through different types of fabrics to create different textures as well. Take a look!

Disney Mashup : Part 1

This is part one of a project the Computer Art class is currently working on. At this point the only information that was given was for them to create a Disney mashup of two Disney characters.

Some students took liberty regarding the definition of Disney... That's ok. This part of the project will really drive the next part.. To be revealed soon!

Stencils... But First

Hammering, sawing, cutting, projecting, gluing, collaging... is collaging a word? All at the same time and all in n effort to get to the point where we can spray paint our stencils... Here, I'll show you what I mean...

We are making our own frames so one of the steps is to cut the wood. Sawing away... each stick of 2x2 wood can be cut into a 22 x 26 inch frame.

Meanwhile, some students are projecting what will be their stencils. Projection to get it a little bigger...

After projecting onto tag board, comes the cutting. An X-acto blade makes a nice tool for cutting out the negative space.

Can't project because the projectors are in use? No problem! Let's add some texture to the place where I'll stencil will go. Newspaper and old art books make a nice backdrop.. Rip, cut and paste.

Like this..

Well, what about some contrasting color? Watercolor and printing ink work well cause you can adjust the water to adjust the opacity.. nice to see some of the text and images from the underlying surface.

You know what would be cool? If we added some texture by spray painting through lace and cloth...

See, I told you that would look cool!

Ok, come back next week and we'll finally get to the stencils!

Art Students use Creativity for Great Cause

Apex Sculpture & Ceramics class designed an arts installation inside a PODS container to promote breast cancer awareness and deliver a message of hope.

The creation entitled “Hope” was exhibited at Visual Art Exchange as part of downtown Raleigh’s First Friday gallery walk.

Sophomore Drew Pedersen was the driving force behind the project. It was his idea to pay tribute to the many family members and friends he and his fellow classmates have lost to cancer while promoting October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sketchbook Pro on the iPad

This is our third time back on the ipads but our first time using Sketchbook Pro. The other two times we explored the app Layers and learned how to use the different brushes as well as gain an understanding of using different layers.

Today, we went through a three step process. The first step was to use large brushes, with low opacity to create a background layer.

Next, we used crisp, small pencils to sketch texture into a second layer. We also changed the mode on this layer from normal to screen or multiply.

On the last layer we used all different types of brushes to block either a landmark or architectural structure.

The entire process served three purposes. 1. Get everyone aquatinted with Sketchbook Pro. 2. Get everyone accustom to using multi-layers to build up a digital painting. 3. To prepare them for our next project... spray paint stenciling

2012 International Bring A Scone To Art Class Day

As you know, today, the second Friday in October is

International Bring A Scone to Art Class Day!

We had another successful year here at Apex High School with many people bringing scones to art class.

Erin brought in a whole box of pumpkin scones. Hope you don't mind sharing Erin.

Printmaking Final with Art 1: Part 2

After a week of printing our linoluem cuts we now have our final prints to share. Students were able to choose the colors of their paper and ink that best represented their design. Each print is part of a 5 print series. The students had a great time seeing there sketches evolve from basic ideas to a well planned executed composition.

Cup Portraits

So I had this idea that we could create portraits by putting cups in the fence. In my head this seemed like a neat, fun and simply project to do. Boy was I wrong...

It started out alright. We create maps by coloring in fence templates in Photoshop. the idea, wherever there was a black mark colored in, we would place a cup..

Then we hit the snags.. To start with, vines and weeds had grown up around the fence. It took a while to clear the bush and shrubs and pull the vines out of the fence.

Next issue was the weather. Rain, rain, rain. The ground was saturated. We put down cardboard to go through the mud but it wasn't much help.

Also didn't realize how much cups weigh!

just kidding, but we did need more cups than I had. Somebody please go to the store and buy more cups.

Finally today the sun came out and it warmed up a bit.

Most groups have started work.

This portrait is Darth Vader.
