Interactive Chalk Murals : Day 2

We started work on our latest project, interactive chalk murals. The idea is to create murals on the wall of the courtyard where other students can take photos of themselves interacting with the murals.

Today was day two of actual work on the walls. The goal was to block in colors wit hlarge sidewalk chalks. tomorrow, we might be ready to start working in more details.

Color Me Katie : Artist Inspiration

Here at Apex HS Art, we decided instead of giving everyone in the Art One class a sketchbook assignment, that we would break up each class into teams of 5-6 students.

Each week, only one team would have a sketchbook assignment.. and not just have to complete an assignment, but rather to compete against the other members of their group. Think of it like a reality game show TV program in the art room.

So this week we gave our first set of teams an artist that they would use as an inspiration.. and since we are starting work on our interactive chalk murals, we thought Katie Sokoler, AKA Color Me Katie would be the perfect artists to start with.

Each student's art was critiqued based on Creativity, Craftsmanship and Inspiration by their fellow class members... you know, the kids that didn't have a sketchbook assignment this week.

So here, for your viewing pleasure, are this week's entries...

Interactive Chalk Murals : Part 1

We started work on our latest project, interactive chalk murals. The idea is to create murals on the wall of the courtyard where other students can take photos of themselves interacting with the murals.

Easier seen than said so as an example, the giant spider web. Seen above as a sketch, seen  below as an outline drawing. Next, we will fill in the colors to complete the murals.

Another example above, a sketch of a person doodling on their math class work.

To complete the project we're gonna need a lot of chalk so we decided to make our own. Here are some chalks in the works. We mixed plaster of paris with tempera paint and poured it into paper towel rolls.

iPad : Day One

Today was our first day trying out the new iPads in the Media Center. They came loaded up with Sketchbook Pro and Layers Pro. Today, we only used Layers. It was enough just to get in there and give that app a go.

I gave a simple task, create three forms using analogous colors and try blending with the smudge tool. OK, so this one might have gone overboard with the smudging. :)

I think everyone had a good time. They were so focused!

After a bit, I showed everyone how to use the layers in Layers. Then I set them loose to draw anything they wanted to. I think she's either drawing a furby or a mogwai..

Well, that was fun! We'll have to try again sometime!

Shadow Art

Did your teacher ever give you a box of junk and a strong light source and tell you to make some art? I'm sure he or she did. It happens all the time. In fact, it happened today in Sands Art One class. Here are the results...

They create a giant monster and...

The monster is looming over a small child's bed. Scary!

I like this tree. it is part of...

This recreation of the movie poster for E.T.

Cool how the bottles taped together make ET and the boy on the bike.

They are making an amusement park including..

A rollercoaster and a ferris wheel.

This bird is flying in the sky of clouds.

Working on a water scene.

We didn't start the fire. Incorporating a little Photoshop and projecting it on the wall.

A B movie about a guy walking a plank...

Aliens abducting an innocent victim.

Space, the final frontier... and the final shadow art of the day.
