Kite Day 2012

Despite weather conditions not being ideal for kite flying, our team set out to conquer the air. Today was our day. Art History Kite Day 2012!



We left the trailer and headed down a short cut through the woods to the lower field.



Since we've had so much rain, the creak was particularly high making crossing somewhat of a challenge.



I thought placing a large log across the creak might make crossing easier.



Mitch though otherwise.



Eventually we all arrived safely at the lower field. There was Van Gogh's Starry Night...



Matisse was ready to fly...



As was my personal favorite, the Zonkey Kite (automatic 100).



But let me tell you the tale of the Sponge Bob/Warhol kite.



The story starts out as most all kites do..



with drawing and a lot of time and effort painting to get it just so...



The proud team enters the field, ready to take command of the sky..



But like Romeo and Juliet, the story ends in tragedy!

All in all it was a successful day of little flying, even less art history knowledge, and a lot of wet feet.

Anamorphosis

Today in Art One we went to the computer lab and attempted to create grid maps for 3D street art. Step one was to use PhotoShop to anamorphosize (is that a word) an object. This proved harder than I had originally thought.

Later in the afternoon, I put Brian, a student in my computer Art class, up to the challenge. He created this Rubik's Cube. All three of these photos are of the same image. The first two are just taken from different perspectives. The bottom one has some of the layers turned off.

PeakFest Poster

PeakFest 2012
On Saturday, May 5, 2012, Salem Street in historic downtown Apex will come alive! What started as a small community day in a school parking lot has grown into an event that draws hundreds of vendors and over 15,000 people to the streets of downtown Apex.

The Computer Art class at apex had the opportunity to create the poster for this exciting event. Entries have been submitted to the committee for a final decision. Here are few examples...

Typography

The requirements for this project limited the number of colors to two plus black white and the letters to one word. After that, they were free to create their typography art anyway they chose.






The original Carrie Underwood portrait met the two color requirement but then Kate started playing with different gradients for the background. I posted just three of the many she completed to show how each gradient gave the portrait such a difference appearance.

Stencils 2012

So I gave Tyler a saw so he could cut some wood which he will use to make a frame which will house his stencil art. It's gonna be cool.



Bri had a cool shirt on which I thought would make a real nice addition to our stencil projects. I told her she should bring it in tomorrow so we can spray paint through it.



She didn't think that was such a good idea.



Well, maybe not her shirt cause it is new but we tried this with an old shirt and the effect worked pretty neat-o-keen. don't you think?



So you kids keep building your frames and we'll pick this up again tomorrow..

Art History Kites 2012

March comes in like a lion, right? What better way to celebrate lion like wind then by flying a kite. so the Art History class is busy making kites. Not just any old kites... art History kites. How exciting, yes I know! So hopefully later this week, if the wind is right, we'll go outside and make it so.







Kristen is not making a kite. She is playing "Hungry, Hungry Venus of Willendorf" the classic marble strategy game.



This is Caity. She was on an episode of One Tree Hill but she doesn't like when people talk about it cause she is modest.

Return of the Monsters!

So if you remember, last semester Apex HS Art attempted a collaboration with the kindergarten class at the Moline School District in Illinois. They drew monsters, the Ceramics class at Apex recreated them in 3D, and the Computer Art class created package designs. We had intended to ship the final products back to Illinois. Unfortunately, they were way to heavy and would have cost to much to ship.



Well, we are up to it again. This time we are making much smaller monsters. The Computer art class will also be designing much smaller and lighter packages. These to factors alone should allow us to ship our monsters out before the end of the year. But don't tell anyone in Illinois. It's top secret for now.
