Gesture Drawing to Expressive Painting

The photos below were taken at the halfway mark of this project. We started a lesson in figure drawing, proportion and in particular, gesture drawing.

Our first gesture drawings were charcoal on newsprint. Later we hung paper around the room and drew with markers.



From there we took a look at the paintings of German Expressionists and the tie ins between gesture drawing and expressionist paintings.



We went back to the hung paper several times. First, to create gesture drawings using only black paint. Then later, adding one expressive color to those gestures.



Later we did an expressive painting using only white paint, right over the previous paintings.



For the last part of the wall painting we reviewed Entartete Kunst "Degenerate Art". The final stage was to go back and respond in any way they wanted to.



for the final piece each student will select his or her favorite part of the wall, remove the piece and matt it. They will add a written description about the project and why they selected their chosen area.
